The Bio-CCU project helps turn CO₂ into a valuable resource

01.09.2026

Prof. Lisandra Meneses and Prof. Timo Kikas attended the kick-off meeting of the Bio-CCU – Biogenic Carbon Capture and Utilization project, held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 17–18 August.

The project aims to identify where biogenic CO₂ is generated and explore how it can be captured, utilized, and transformed into a valuable resource. It will also demonstrate the practical and economic potential of using biogenic CO₂ in real-world applications.

At the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the project focuses on CO₂ capture and utilization through microalgae cultivation, in close collaboration with Tartu Veevärk. The resulting biomass will subsequently be converted into biochar for soil improvement. By developing cross-border value chains, the project seeks to demonstrate how biogenic CO₂ can replace fossil-based CO₂ and create new opportunities for both businesses and society alike.

Led by the University of Gävle in Sweden, the project has received approximately €2 million in funding from the EU Interreg Central Baltic Programme and brings together a strong consortium of partners from across the Central Baltic region:

  • University of Gävle (Lead Partner)
  • KTH Royal Institute of Technology
  • Gästrike Ekogas AB
  • BioDriv East
  • Estonian University of Life Sciences
  • Tartu Veevärk
  • LAB University of Applied Sciences
  • Riga Technical University

Turning CO₂ into a valuable resource—with algae doing the heavy lifting—is exactly the kind of practical, innovative bioeconomy research we are proud to bring to EMÜ. We look forward to sharing our progress and demonstrating the potential of this approach for a more sustainable future.
