Projekt sai alguse 2014. aastal koostöös Helsingi Ülikooli, Keskkonnaobservatooriumi ja Tartu Ülikooliga. Tänaseks on Järvseljal asuv mõõtejaam osa rahvusvahelisest võrgustikust GlobalSMEAR, mis uurib ökosüsteemide ja atmosfääri vastastikmõju üle kogu maailma.
Aastapäeva puhul toimus Järvseljal seminar ja jaamakülastus, kus tehti kokkuvõtteid senistest teadustöödest, arutleti tulevikuplaanide üle ning tutvustati külalistele mõõtetehnikat ja jaama ümbritsevaid metsi.
SMEAR Eesti Jaamalink opens in new pagelink opens in new page peamine eesmärk on mõõta atmosfääris sisalduvate gaaside, näiteks süsihappegaasi, metaani, osooni ning väävel- ja lämmastikoksiidide, kontsentratsioone, samuti jälgida meteoroloogilisi näitajaid nagu temperatuur, õhuniiskus ja tuulekiirus.
SMEAR Eesti on oluline lüli kliimauuringutes. Jaamas kogutud andmed aitavad täiustada kliimamudeleid, toetavad poliitikakujundajaid teaduspõhiste otsuste tegemisel ning inspireerivad uut põlvkonda teadlasi uurima, kuidas meie metsad ja atmosfäär koos toimivad.

Atmospheric pollutants like ozone, nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide are measured continuously on different heights at the SMEAR Estonia station since 2015. Data products regarding these gases are available. These are offered as a monitoring service to track air quality for national and international inventories.
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a payload up to 4 kg is available for remote sensing and sampling operations. The UAV system offers air sampling services to cartridge systems and imaging methods.
Carbon exchange between the forest ecosystem and the atmosphere are measured continuously since 2014 at the SMEAR Estonia station. Data products for carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor and carbon monoxide are available. In combination with forest management information system the platform offers a monitoring service to track greenhouse gases for national and international inventories and verify activities and transitions in relation to land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) policies.
Meteorological parameters are measured at the SMEAR Estonia station since 2014. Constant measures at the station are precipitation, air temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, cloud base height, atmospheric visibility, solar radiation and sunshine length. The set of measurements complies to the Estonian weather service monitoring stations. Data products regarding meteorological parameters are existing and offered as monitoring service to national and international repositories and weather service providers.
The SMEAR Estonia station offers access to an 130m heigh mast. Sample nodes are located at 5, 15, 30, 40, 50, 70, 90, and 110 m. These nodes are equipped with 220 V/16A AC, 24/12 V DC and an internet connection for possible remote access. Air samples are drawn continuously from 5 heights. Auxiliary measurements offered are 3D wind speed and turbulence and temperature on 30, 50, 70, 90, and 110m height, atmospheric pressure on 50m height, incoming direct and diffuse radiation as well as reflected radiation at 40m height.
The SMEAR Estonia station offers access to two 30m scaffolding towers. The scaffolding towers are equipped with 220 V/16A AC and an internet connection for possible remote access. The towers have platforms on 10, 20, and 30 m height. Auxiliary measurements permanently offered are 3D wind speed and turbulence and temperature. They offer a platform for forest ecosystem related research and development.
