Estonian wood-based bioresource includes materials from forestry and the wood industry that can be used for energy production, the development of the bioeconomy, and various industrial applications.
We assess the distribution of Estonia's wood-based bioresource and work on finding the best use for it. Sustainable management of forests and bioresources is crucial for maintaining both economic and ecological balance.
Over 50% of Estonia's land area, or 2.3 million hectares, is covered by forests, and the growing stock is estimated at 454 million cubic meters. The forestry sector contributes around 5% to Estonia's GDP and provides employment for approximately 30,000 people. Wood-based energy accounts for about 15–20% of Estonia's renewable energy production.
In recent years, the annual harvest volume has been 10–12 million cubic meters, depending on the state of the wood market and climate.
